Dying Matters Awareness Week – 14th to 20th May

I was very interested to hear the Dying Matters Awareness Week referred to on BBC Breakfast.  The theme of the week was “Small actions, big difference”.  We are asked to reflect on the different ways that we can give support those who are dying.

Various ways were highlighted:

Dying takes quite a long time and certainly patients with terminal diagnoses ask “please don’t just back off, talk to us”

In the Hospice movement there is always room to bring light into a situation by talking about end of life matters

A dying person may want to discuss funeral plans and indeed even make detailed arrangements themselves

The dying often want to consider and plan for things they want to do before death. They may want to make a list of things that they want to do before they die – it may be to go up the Eiffel Tower or maybe something as simple as enjoying a lavender lotion hand or foot massage

Certainly the thoughts identified by Dying Matters increased my awareness.
